The Bulls behind the Bull Market

The “Bull Market” cartoon presented articulates the idea that the bullish rally we have seen in the market is driven primarily by corrupt business techniques and the parasitical financial gain of large corporations. This particular illustration depicts Goldman Sachs (one of the wall street superstar investment banks) as the corrupt corporation in mention. This insinuation is shown by satirically annotating the company’s thoughts as “Every Penny was earned honestly”(Bish Cartoon artist). Where the artist insinuates that the company has in some corrupt way, secured the gains they present.  The artist also presents Goldman Sachs as an overweight man, showing the vast size of the company, as well as hinting at the idea that the company could be unhealthy and greedy. With the company personified as a man, the artist illustrates the man with his arms in the air and palms turned up, holding the corrupt money in a way that can be interpreted as careless or nonchalant. This portrays the company as an arrogant, overly confident institution. In the text box superimposed over the image the phrase “now you know why they call it a ‘Bull’ market”(Bish Cartoon artist) is written. This phrase is used to clad the “Bull Market” with an overtone that it is driven by a bunch of bulls. These Bulls being the large greedy corporations of the like of Goldman Sachs and other Walls Street powerhouses who drive the market forward when in reality the smaller companies do not feel the same economic upturn.
