Van Gogh has an impression to his viewers of portraying his artwork to others in a secretive manner. While many see his paintings as what they appear to be initially, he almost always has a different meaning than his artwork gives off. The Cafe Terrace At Night is one of many of Van Gogh's well known paintings filled with passion, creativity and uniqueness. It appears as just a painting of a restaurant patio at dusk, but has an entirely different background to the intriguing artwork. The reality of this painting entails religious aspects, as it represents Jesus sitting down with all of his disciples. If analyzed deeper, there are twelve people sitting around a man with long hair, the man acting as if he is reading some sort of book. If you look closely, there are also several hidden crosses throughout the painting, one of them being above the man preachings, head. Aside from my personal analysis, there is also evidence that religious aspects are present due to the note recorded that he wrote to his brother. He made a comment about the painting stating the world needs a “tremendous need” for religion. He also was known for his subtle Christian symbolism throughout his artwork, giving me the initial impression that this piece could mean more than just a patio and a dozen people. Overall, it is clear that with a little observation and analysis, the initial impression of most artwork is not equivalent to the actual meaning. Not only is this proven in the analysis above, but it is also shown throughout several rhetorical examples mentioned in the prior assignment.
